SU Track & Field Wins Seven Events at Texas Southern Relays

HOUSTON, Texas - The Syracuse University men's and women's track & field teams won seven events and 10 student-athletes qualified for the BIG EAST Championship at the Texas Southern Relays on Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23 at Rice University. Team scores were not kept at the event.
Junior Tim Adrian (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark) led a contingent of SU throwers with first-place finishes in the shot put (53'1.50") and discus (169'9.00"), to qualify for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships. Classmates Tim Biever (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) and Steve Bedard (Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph's) also qualified for BIG EAST competition. Biever placed third in the discus with a throw of 152'5.00", while Bedard qualified in the shot put with a throw of 49'9.00" and the discus with a throw of 144'8.00".
Joel Carusone (Slingerland, N.Y./Guilderland) won the pole vault with a qualifying mark of 15'10.00". Junior Richard Polidore (Chino, Calif./Chino) placed third in the 100 meters in a BIG EAST -qualifying time of 10.91. The freshmen throwing duo of Johvonne Hernandez (Port Isabel, Texas/Port Isabel) and Nicole Kendrick (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) qualified for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships in the shot put and discus. Hernandez won the shot with a throw of 47'7.00" and placed second in the discus with 149'5.00". Kendrick was second in the shot put with 46'5.50" and threw 141'1.00" in the discus for sixth place.
Graduate student Alicia Crowd (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich) also posted BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying marks with a 56.56 first-place finish in the 400 meters. Senior Stacey Dwyer (Huntington, N.Y./Barton County CC) won the 400-meter hurdles in a season-best time of 1:00.88, while sophomore LaNae Walker (Dallas, Texas/DeSoto) finished fifth in 1:02.88.
Freshman high jumper Jenna Grimaldi (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius) rounded out the list of championship qualifiers with a 5'8.00" second-place finish in the high jump.
SU will return to Houston this weekend for the Tom Tellez Invitational, hosted by Houston Unviersity on Saturday, March 30. Competition will begin at 11 a.m. est with the men's hammer throw at the Lewis/Tellez Complex.
